A few more highlights from NMN, following our morning check of a couple of moth traps set around Gower: At Steve & Sarah Walmsley's at Pilton Green 1 Vestal, 1 Yellow-tail, 2 Pearly Underwing, 3 Delicate and 1 Anomalous; at Port Eynon 1 Mallow, 1 Pearly Underwing, 1 late Triple-spotted Clay, 1 Delicate, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw and 2 very attractive conopid flies - Leopoldius signatus; a quick check of some Ivy blossom at Hermon, Crofty last also produced 1 Pearly Underwing and a Brindled Green.

East Glam NMN meeting at Kenfig NNR: (3 x MV traps & 12 members) - 31 spp. were recorded with the highlight being Uresiphita polygonalis (2nd vc41 rec.) a very scarce migrant from southern Europe. Convolvulus Hawk-moth (1), Scarce Bordered Straw (2), Archer's Dart (3) & Vapourer (1). A quick stop over in the Vale of Glam. produced a further 15spp. with Brindled Green (1), Rosy Rustic (1) & Dusky Thorn (4) the pick. A very big thank you to all who turned up at both GMRG events. 7 attended the West Glamorgan NMN event at Port Eynon: The wind made sure there was little in the dune MV trap by 10pm when the heavens opened and we packed up, but the Ivy blossom saved the day: At MV light (dunes): 4 Rush Veneer, 1 Small Blood-vein, 1 Archer's Dart, 1 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 3 Square-spot Rustic, 1 Setaceous Hebrew Character, 4 Flounced Chestnut and 1 Scarce Bordered Straw. On the ivy blossom: 1 Blastobasis decolorella, 3 Epiphyas postvittana, 1 Clepsis consimilana, 1 Emmelina monodactyla, 1 Garden Carpet, ~40 Turnip Moth, 5 Dark Sword-grass, ~30 Pearly Underwing, 1 Large Yellow Underwing, 6 Lesser Yellow Underwing, 3 Autumnal Rustic, ~30 Square-spot Rustic, 1 Cosmopolitan, 2 Delicate, 1 Shore Wainscot, 1 Red Sword-grass, 25 Angle Shades, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw and 4 Silver Y. Despite the high winds 44 species were recorded from two traps set at Delvid (west Gower) last night, the highlight being 6 fabulous Convolvulus Hawks. Other migrants included 35 Rush Veneer, 1 Vestal, 3 Dark Sword-grass, 1 Pearly Underwing, 5 Delicate, 5 Scarce Bordered Straw, and 6 Silver Y. Non-migrants highlighhts were 2 Shore Wainscot, 2 Large Wainscot, 1 Feathered Brindle and 2 Pinion-streaked Snout. Also called round to Veronica's to photograph her Convolulus Hawks where there was a Humming-bird Hawk nectaring on Balsam flowers. If the rain holds off, the weather should otherwise be favourable for more migrants on NMN...

Highlights included 48 Rush Veneer, 5 Udea ferrugalis, 7 Vestal, 1 Striped Hawk-moth, 1 Dark Sword-grass, 2 Pearly Underwing, 3 Delicate, 2 Whitespeck, 1 Feathered Ranunculus, 2 Small Mottled Willow, 5 Scarce Bordered Straw and 5 Silver Y. Ivy blossoming in the valley the night before produced 33 species including 5 Mecyna asinalis, 7 Mullein Wave, 2 Treble Bar, 4 Dark Sword-grass, 3 Neglected Rustic, 1 Delicate, 1 Scarce Bordered Straw, 2 Anomalous and 15 Silver Y. 8 Glow-worms were also seen in the grassy scrub at the top end of the valley.

Neil Edwards post me an image of a very large caterpillar he found yesterday crossing the car park at Penyrheol Comp. in Gorseinon, it being a Goat Moth larva, presumably looking for a place to pupate. We have trapped this species twice in the garden, but i never thought that they would have been breeding this close (200m) and in such unpromisng looking habitat (i.e. school fields lined with a thin belt of willow and oak scrub).

Highlights from two traps above Mewslade last night were: Rush Veneer (45), Palpita vitrealis (1), Small Blood-vein (1), Vestal (5), Yellow Belle (1), Hoary Footman (2) and Scarce Bordered Straw (3). Species new for the year for me were Autumnal Rustic, Neglected Rustic, Sallow and Frosted Orange. Beetles in the traps included several Aphodius sp. Nicrophorus investigator (3), Nicrophorus humator (1) and a Dor Beetle (Geotrupes stercorarius, which intriguingly has the same specifc name as Great Skua's generic name!

Just received a report of what sounds like a Privet Hawk-moth Caterpillar in Caerphilly. This is the first record Unitary Authority of Caerphilly!

A Diamond-back Moth, trapped by my mother-in-law in our Bridgend house last night as it became attracted to the television screen!

A trapping session in the walled Garden at Oxwich last night (V. Shenston, D. Painter, Sandra and myself) produced about 60 species, the only real highlight being a single Palpita vitrealis. Other species of interest included Wax moth, Pretty Chalk Carpet, Black Arches, Archer's Dart and Feathered Gothic.

Received report from Veronica Shenston of Convolvulus Hawk, Scarce Bordered Straw and Pearly Underwings at Cwm Ivy last night. She and David Painter also recorded 8 Chalk Carpets at Crawley Bluff (near Oxwich) last week.

Rest Bay, Porthcawl: 24 species in actinic trap, including Rush Veneer (2), Pale Mottled Willow (1), Cabbage Moth (2), Lychnis, Small Square-spot, Setaceous Hebrew Character (2), Heart and Dart (1!), Vine's Rustic (5), Flounced Rustic (16), Silver Y (1), Yellow Shell (1, worn), Acleris variegana (1).
