On the 24th, I ran a skinner trap at Cwm Taf fechan from 22:00 until 02:50. I recorded 45spp, the highlights of which were: Scorched Wing (6) Buff Tip (1) Puss Moth (1) Barred Umber (1) Lobster Moth (3) Chinese Character (1) and Poplar Hawk-moth. The weather was fine, minimum temperature 12.5o degrees.

Parc Penallta: 23rd of May. Lots of activity on a beautiful day at the Parc, species seen Yellow Shell 20+, Burnet Companion 13, Cinnabar, Latticed Heath 4, Silver-ground Carpet and Angled Shades. Interesting to disturb 6 Myelois circumvoluta (Thistle Ermine) one happily posing for it's photograph.

Thistle Ermine
Trapping overnight on 24 May produced 28 species, with four new for the garden. Highlight was a Pearly Underwing, but other new species were Small Fan-foot, Brown Rustic and Fox Moth. Other species new for the year were Lobster Moth and Scorched Wing. The new species have taken my garden list past 200.

Bargoed: Ran the MV Lamp last night for just two and a half hours, very pleased to get 21 macro species that included:-Pale Tussock, Grey Dagger, Clouded Silver, Grey Pine Carpet, Brown-line Bright-eye, Brown Silver-line, Grey Pug, Small Phoenix and Flame Carpet. The highlight of the session was a superb male Lime Hawkmoth.

Sharp Angled Peacock Rest Bay actinic: produced a Mottled Rustic and a Green Pug amongst the usuals. At Kenfig on 21st, dozens of Grass Rivulets on the wing, plus a single Silver Hook, and several Opsibotys fuscalis.

Amongst half a dozen species caught last night was a Lime Hawk Moth, my first for the garden since I started trapping in 2002. Is this species more numerous this year? I don't think I would have overlooked it in the past!

Butterflies on the wing include Wall, Common Blue, Small Heath, Small Blue, Orange-tip, Green-veined White, Peracock, Small Tortoiseshell and Red Admiral. There was a Brown Argus at the Portobello parking area on 4th.

Mothing overnight 3rd May in our Bridgend garden(MV):- Shuttle-shaped Dart, Treble Lines, Hebrew Character, Vine's Rustic, Heart & Dart, Angle Shades, Brinstone, Flame Shoulder, L.B.Apple moth, C.M.Carpet, Early Grey. A small Bat sp. has spent several evenings feasting on our moths. At one point a few nights ago, I stood against our large back garden window and was literally centimetres from it as it came lightly in to contact with the glass chasing its prey (that's moths not me!).

Brimstone & Dingy Skipper Rest Bay actinic: this morning's catch included Treble Lines, Garden Carpet, Willow Beauty, Shuttle-shaped Dart (4) and Hebrew Character (7). A Spotted Flycatcher was in the garden, but well away from the trap!
