Two trap nights in the garden this week (28 and 29 March) have produced Common Quaker, Clouded Drab, Oak Beauty, Early Grey, Hebrew Character and Small Quaker, with the last being a 'new for the garden'. Two gorgeous Brimstones at Forge Fach, Clydach on 24 March. With the colder weather predicted for the weekend, that could be it for a while.

Trapping at Bwlch-y-Cwm, North Cardiff last night produced 19 species: Diurnia fagella (8), March Moth (15), Shoulder Stripe (1), Brindled Pug (1), Early Thorn (1), Pale Brindled Beauty (2), Oak Beauty (2), Dotted Border (1), Engrailed (3), Small Quaker (3), Common Quaker (40), Clouded Drab (5), Twin-spotted Quaker (6), Hebrew Character (1), Early Grey (1), Satellite (1), Chestnut (2), Oak Nycteoline (1) & Nut-tree Tussick (1).

A surprise addition to the house list was an Indain Meal Moth (Plodia interpunctella) found in our kitchen last week. We've no idea what it's come out of since we have no pets!

Mainly Common Quaker (11) and Early Grey (5), plus single Hebrew Character, Emmelina monodactyla, Clouded Drab & Tawny Pinion. On checking the morning's pinion I realised that the 'Pale Pinion' I reported a while back was also Tawny.

Firday night produced 9 moths of 5 species in the garden MV - Hebrew Character, Small Quaker, Chestnut, 3 Common Quaker & 3 Early Gret. Last night was a bit colder and only produced singletons of Hebrew Character, Common Quaker & Clouded Drab.

Bargoed: Twenty-plume moth (Alucita hexadactyla) from home. Parc Slip Nature Parc: Queen Buff-tailed Bumble Bee (Bombus terrestris) on wing this afternoon, also Water Cricket (Velia Spp) hunting in stream margins. Spring has almost sprung!!

Bargoed: Leaf Mine on Blackberry photographed on home hedge today, probably Stigmella aurella that survived the ravages of winter. Also Small Tortoiseshell on daffodil at Penpedairheol. From Parc Penallta five Eristalis tenax (Drone Fly)on Coltsfoot, plus Calliphora vomitoria (Bluebottle) and Lucilia caesar (Greenbottle).

Stigmella mine - probably S. aurella.

Out in the garden today in Bridgend (6th March) and so far have seen a really fresh peacock butterfly and a brimstone, making the most of the sun.
