After pinning Jake's Scarce Bordered Straw in order to take a photo, this allowed closer examination and it was apparent that it was actually something else, and what's more something not in any of the UK guides. I finally found a plate of Pandesma robusta in 'Mariposas de Canarias' that matched perfectly. Further checks on the interenet initially appear to confirm this, and other UK import records have emerged via Dave Slade from Martin Honey. It is an African and Asian species that is known to appear occasionally in southern Europe and in South Africa is known as the Robust Tabby.
PS. Jake - you were right, it didn't look right for Scarce Bordered Straw - my mistake!

Tim Hall A silver Y larva which I found in fresh greens bought at Tescos quickly fed up, pupated and emerged during December. More recently, on 23 December, whilst preparing some brown cap mushrooms (also bought at Tescos) I found a small noctuid larva. This has now grown to full size and is about ready to pupate. I can't identify it from Jim Porter's book on caterpillars, so look forward to it emerging. Watch this space...
