A fair catch, of 27 species resulted from a mild, if wet night. Highlights included:
Clepsis consimilana (1),
Pyrausta purpuralis (2), Bee Moth (2), Thistle Ermine(1), 2 individuals of the normal form of Riband Wave: Ab. Remutata is more common locally; Swallow-tailed Moth (1), Red-necked Footman (1), Turnip Moth (1) and Bordered Sallow (1).

Recent treats at home – 1) Humming Bird Hawkmoth feeding on red valerian on our patio this lunchtime 2) a Large Tabby (moth not cat!) in the house last night 3) on 17 June, picking blackcurrants in the garden, when I stepped back from the bush, found a pair of mated Currant Clearwings on my trouserleg - who needs pheromones!

Bargoed: Home M/V trap produced just eleven species from 11pm until 12.30am last night, the temperature dropped to 38f with almost a full moon to be seen in a clear sky. Double Line, Purple Clay, Cabbage Moth, Square-spot Dart, Large Yellow Underwing, Heart & Dart, Peppered Moth, Dark Arches, Mottled Beauty, Buff Ermine and Uncertain all braved the elements.

In a couple of hours, early afternoon, before the showers arrived, I visited a vacant plot, on Hirwaun industrial estate, and in a brief sunny spell, lured three Six-belted Clearwing to API lure. I next met up with Mike Hogan, at a site West of Heolgerrig, Merthyr Tydfil, and despite the showers, we had
Chrysoteuchia culmella, Green Carpet, Burnet Companion, and two Six- belted Clearwing: the first I've ever managed to lure in Merthyr.

Within two feet I picked up a Buff Ermine - very much alive and placed it in a safe area, where it would not be trodden on...'what a hero' !!

Parc Cwm Darran: Lively few hours spent between showers at this interesting location last Friday 15th, saw 10 or so Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries, good numbers of Large Skippers, Meadow Brown, Speckled Wood, Red Admiral and 2 Painted Lady. The grassland micro's saw countless
Glyphipterix thrasonella, glittering golden when the sun hit them, and also possibly
Glyphipterix fuscoviridella. Many
Crambus lathionellus also disturbed. Finally on the Odonata front my first lone male Beautiful Demoiselle from this location.

A power cut resulted in the garden trap running for only half the night. However, I still recorded 10 species, including Light Emerald and Pale Mottled Willow. A skinner trap run at Twynyrodyn Community school, Merthyr Tydfil,on the 13th, resulted in 33 species, including Diamond-back moth (1),
Pandemis heparana (4),
Epiblema uddmanniana (2), Small Elephant Hawk-moth (3), and The Coronet (1) Some of the catch was kept until the morning and shown to the children, as part of their events, marking Wales Biodiversity Week.

Perenephela lancealis, Phtheochroa inopiana and Small Seraphim My 22w actinic, run overnight in the garden, attracted 25 species, including
Celypha lacunana,

Over the Border: last night (9/6/07) at Dingestow (Monmouthshire) I had a Pempelia formosa to MV. This is a new species for VC35 (so far as I know) and Goater suggests it isn't in Wales. Has it been recorded in Glamorgan?
(I'm not aware of any records of Pempelia formosa for VC41 - DJS)Also a Sycamore & an Orange Footman, both 2nd records for the garden.

Pempelia formosa Bryngarw Country Park (Wales Biodiversity Week moth event): Double Line (2), Mottled Beauty (8), Ingrailed Clay (8), Green Carpet, Sharp-angled Peacock,White Ermine, Buff Ermine (2), and Brown Silver-line. Rest Bay garden actinic produced three new for the year: Bee Moth, Common wainscot and Marbled Beauty amongst 21 species. Kenfig Pool: dragonflies all over with up to 14 Red-veined Darters (some piars in tandem) along south and east shores, where also 20 or more Black-tailed Skimmers (at least 3 pairs in tandem), Emperor (2 males) and Four-spot Chaser(4+).

Saturday 9th June 2007... Salt Lake car park, Porthcawl. The pyralid
Homoeosoma sinuella(7)attracted to the pheromone api whilst attempting (unsuccessfully) to attract Six-belted Clearwing. At Kenfig Burrows during the afternoon a Red-tipped Clearwing was taken at tip & ves at SS802809 ... new for SS88. The specimen is currently at the Kenfig NNR centre if anyone wishes to view it. Also at Kenfig (south dunes)... Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet, Small Magpie,
Opsibotys fuscalis,

Parc Cwm Darran: Yesterday's superb weather saw the following macro's during the afternoon at Cwmllwydrew Meadows:- Loads of Burnet Companions, Brown Silver-line, Bloodvein, Six-spot Burnet, Wood Carpet, Spruce Carpet (on Spruce), and Marbled White Spot. Micro's seen included
Nemophora degerella both male and female,
Anthophilia fabriciana and Brown China-mark with several others needing identification. Nice to also see several Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary on the wing. As a bonus the hoverfly
Volucella pellucens allowed me to photograph it.

Sat Jun 9 9:04:59 2007 In addition to getting a very painful thorn in my finger, a quick beat of the large Purging Buckthorn bush in the pony field at Oxwich Marsh today produced a example of the attractive tortrix
Phtheochroa sodaliana. This is only the second county (and possibly Welsh) record, the other being at Bull Cliff in 2001 (DRWG, MCP & DS). A few Tissue larvae and a mystery micro caterpillar were obtained, along with an adult
Bryotropha desertella, though no sign of any Dark Umber or Brown Scallop larvae yet. If you know of any Purging Buckthorn, it's worth beating for these species over the next month, but be careful of those thorns as my finger's still throbbing!

Bargoed: MV Lamp ran 5/6th June, from 10.30pm until 1.00am produced 30 species of Macro's which included:- Middle-barred Minor, Tawny Marbled Minor, Marbled White Spot, Purple Bar, Red Green Carpet, Mottled Beauty, Common Marbled Carpet,Shoulder-striped Wainscot, Shears and Clouded-bordered Brindle. Old Lady & Shears At Nant y Crimp SSSI north of Penllergaer on 2 June, an actinic light produced a rather disappointing catch with only Striped Wainscot of note. The same evening in the garden produced two more new species for the site - Dark Spectacle and Mottled Rustic - with Elephant and Eyed hawk Moths. This morning in the garden there were several moths new for the year - Miller, Uncertain and Buff Arches. Out of county, an actinic at Carmel Woods this morning had Lobster Moth, Map winged Swift, Bloodvein, Marbled Brown and White-pinion Spotted, but no elm feeding species, which I'd rather being hoping for!

What should have been a good night's catch was somewhat spoiled by the five House sparrows that got into the trap. About 80 moths survived the carnage, including the first Light Arches, Middle-barred Minor and Spectacle for the year. A Green Arches was less fortunate. There were at least 20 Heart & Darts among the casualties, and with the survivors there would have been 85 in the trap.

Whitchurch Hosp. The highlight being a tick! Cypress Carpet. Following on from two records on Gower last autumn (1st vc rec.), this species has now been seen at Barry Island (31/05) and now in Cardiff. It was reported from Monmouthshire last month too.

`Over the border`: Red-tipped clearwing out at 11.45 this morning at Pontnewydd SN447 073 near Kidwelly, Carms. Spotted on bramble brake next to path/stream near osier-dominated wet carr. Pheromones not used. Second vcr [first was also mine at Coed Gwempa in 1990 -that one caught on ground, again in wet carr. I still have the specimen].
