Another Chestnut in the trap last night. I can't be certain it wasn't the same one though!

Ran the MV in our garden last night for the first time this year, and it produced absolutely nothing. Mind you it was pretty nippy.

Anyone interested in helping out with a natinal White-letter Hairstreak survey please check out the following site:
www.hertsmiddx-butterflies.
Liz Goodyear and Andrew Middleton have been doing a lot of WLH survey work and have found WLH at almost all elm sites that they have searched in Herts and Midds. Andrew has randomly selected 240 x 10 km squares in England , Wales and Southern Scotland. Within each 10 k square, a monad has been selected and it is hoped that observers will first look for elm in the monad. If none is present, then the adjacent tetrad should be searched and the whole 10 k square if still no luck. Then later, towards the end of June, the elms should be visited for male activity skirmishing above the tree tops. It is hoped to get a good idea over 3 years of the spatial distribution of WLH and to what degree elms may be used as a proxy for WLH distribution. The website is very interesting and provides a lot of information. I'll be doing the Gower square.

A Small Tortoiseshell has decided to spend a little bit of the winter with me, it's perched on top of my inkjet printer paper feed alongside my desktop (see attached photo), I have to carefully close the curtains each evening so as not to disturb it....pleasant winter company reminding me of warmer days yet to come.

Lots of Winter Moths on the wing at present - seem to be flying in most of the lanes around Gorseinon at least! You think they would wait for calmer weather!

Found my first moth of the year in our Gorseinon house today, it being a fresh specimen of Pyrausta aurata. The previous earliest date was 3rd Feb 2001 when Sandra and myself again found one in the house. Both may have been brought in as pupae in the soil used for potted plants?
