Non-moth news from Kenfig: British Wildlife came just in time with its Longhorn article for the Dusky Longhorn Beetle
Arhopalus rusticus which Rob Davies found crawling up a Reserve Centre wall this morning. This is a new record for Kenfig. The
Onthophagus nuchicornis was collected on 19 July again by Rob who found it crawling out of a cowpat in the north dunes. This was a second record for Kenfig.

Dusky Longhorn Beetle & Onthophagus nuchicornis Hi all, I've recently become interested in moths and have just joined the club. I've had an home made actinic trap running in my garden this past week or so with the following results. Plenty for me to chew on with the macro's, so I'm just concentrating on those for now. Last nights tally - Common Carpet, Common Marbled Carpet, Purple Bar(2), Brimstone(4), Willow Beauty(2), Large Yellow Underwing(6), Lesser Yellow Underwing(3), Marbled Beauty, Knot Grass(a first), Common Rustic(2), Gold Spot(a first). Other species trapped on previous nights - Flame Carpet, Garden Carpet, Common Carpet, Yellow Shell, Small Phoenix, Toadflax Pug(i think), Scarce Footman, Common Footman, Shuttle Shaped Dart, Flame Shoulder, True Lover's Knot, Square-spot Rustic, Beautiful Yellow Underwing, Dark Arches, Flounced Rustic, Rosy Rustic, Spectacle.

Senghenydd, Fri Aug 31 19:44:30 2007 Out of County: Brittany France 23rd/30th Aug. Just a few moths I managed to see at our campsite lights at Chateau Lanniron at Quimper (highlights). Small Emerald, Portland Ribbon Wave, Peacock Moth, Black Arches, Hoary Footman, Four-spotted Footman, Jersey Tiger, Radford's Flame Shoulder, Rosy Underwing & Scarce Silve-lines. Also Clouded Yellow (2). The reaction to looking for moths was - Brits: (that anyone was interested in such horrible things), Dutch: (a dull, stupid Englander) & French (are they edible?).

Much more diversity in the trap last night, with three good additions to the garden list: Red Underwing, Svenson's Copper Underwing & Pedasia conterminella which has not been recorded in Glamorgan since Peter Howlett stopped running a trap in his graden in 1996. Other species of interest: Bucculatrix ulmella, Canary Shouldered and Dusky Thorn, Lesser Swallow Prominent, Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing and a mere 120 Large Yellow Underwings.

Red Underwing, Pedasia conterminella & Bucculatrix ulmella Another bumper hawl of Large Yellow Underwings was joined by a couple of migrants (1 Silver Y and 1 Diamond-back). Also present a Nycteoline that is probably just Oak, but with large number of Great Brocades in the Country, of presumed Scandinavian origin I felt it was worth getting it checked for the other species.

Antler, Coxcomb Prominent, Pebble Hook-tip, Small Phoenix, Lesser Swallow Prominent & Pandemis heperana With work on the Moths of Glamorgan entering it's final stages (at least from our point of view), one species that is likely to be removed from the county list and placed in the appendix is Peacock Moth (Macaria notata). If anyone has an photographs or specimens of this species from Glamorgan, then can they please contact either myself, Barry or Jake. Future records of this species must be accompanied by either a photograph or voucher specimen. It is possible that it does occur in the county, but the evidence to date seems to indicate that only Sharp-angled Peacock (Macaria alternata) resides in the county. Please prove us wrong!
