One new species for the garden on Saturday night: Pale Shouldered Brocade. Also a couple of species new for the year in Treble Lines and Bright Line Brown Eye. A 15W actinic in woodland above Abergarwed in the neath valley produced a dozen species including Coxcomb Prominent, Peach Blossom, Nut Tree Tussock and Small Phoenix.

MV trap in garden (Gorseinon) last night attracted 20 species, those new for the year for us here being Treble Lines, Pine Beauty, Poplar Grey, Buff-tip and a very early Eudonia mercurella. Also 17 Cockchafers.

`Over the border` at Pwll, Llanelli: in the trap this morning - a lime hawk moth, alder and a tawny pinion. I`ve had the lime hawk moth here before and suspect the larvae may be using elm. Also 41 cockchafers, amongst a good no./diversity of moths.

8 species in garden last night at (new!) MV bulb, including Water Carpet, which is new for the site. Also Marbled Minor and Spectacle, both of which seem early, according to Waring and Townsend. Nant Glais Woods, near Glais, at 15W actinic: Least Black Arches, V Pug, Pale Tussock (10),Waved Umber, Brown silver-lines and Hebrew character. Lots of cockchafers at both locations.

Just to let you know that Narrow-bordered Bee Hawk-moth was reported from two new sites in Dorset on 21st and 22nd April. This highlights how worthwhile it is to search potential sites for this moth on sunny days. Butterfly Conservation are piloting a new butterfly monitoring method and are looking for volunteers. If you are interested or are willing to help by taking on one of the following squares please get in touch. Instructions are to follow shortly, but from what I can gather the method is to be similar to the BTOs BBS, but will initially require four visits during the year. Lime Hawk-moth & Mullein I know this report is not in Glamorgan (quite)or of a moth, but there was a Clouded Yellow at Peterstone Gout about 300yards east of where the path meets the sea wall. It was in a field,where in reeds begin next to the reen, watched from the sea wall. Several Green veined white also present. 22/4 1330

Hairy Dragonfly On Tuesday there were plenty of Adela reaumurella enjoying the sunshine in the woods north of Treharris - including some fairly large swarms of males. Also a couple of Incurvaria masculella having a good time on a birch leaf.

Just seen a female Lime Hawk on the front of an Indian restaurant in Penarth town centre. At the weekend I had Speckled Wood, Holly Blue and Kidney-spot Ladybird in my Llandaff North garden, as well as a very early Bucculatrix thoracella in my kitchen.

Overnight in our Bridgend garden produced 31 moths (11sp). Mostly the same mix as recently including our first Red Twin-spot Carpet, Pebble Prominent, Mottled Pug and Double-striped Pug of the year. Saw our first Orange Tip butterflies of the year, 3 at Kenfig yesterday and 1 up above Cefn-yr-Erw Primate sanctuary near Abercrave today.

Red Chestnut & Brindled Pug Over the border here in Carmarthen, I had 420 moths of 42 species last night including many "earliest county records" - Peach Blossom by nearly 3 weeks (and two of them), Lobsters, Pale Tussock, Clouded Silver, Clouded Border, Least Black Arches, etc etc. High numbers of Frosted Green (48), Lunar Marbled Brown (39) and Brindled Beauty (37).

Pete check out earlier sightings for Hummers, yes yours is early, but not exceptional these days. They do also overwinter occasionally! Yesterday David painter showed me a nice colony of a rare mining bee Colletes cunicularius (The Vernal Colletes) at Oxwich dunes. In the same area were some Andrena flavipes (Yellow Legged Mining Bee), a few Podalonia hirsuta (Hairy Sand Wasp) one of which was carrying large Xestia caterpillar, and the attractive pyralid moth Pyrausta cingulata.

Over the last few nights, the garden has produced several new for the year, including Flame Shoulder, Brindled Beauty, Angle Shades, Brindled Pug, and Brimstone. As for Butterflies, Speckled Wood, Brimstone, Small White have all been through the garden over the last two days.

A Brimstone moth was resting on the house wall today, our first of the year. We've had a variety of Butterflies in the neighbourhood and at Newbridge Fields in the last few days: Peacock, Speckled Wood, Green-veined White and Small Tortoiseshell.

I do not remember seeing so many butterflies so early in the spring. I have seen many peacocks and small tortishells along with 6 brimstones a comma and speckled wood in the past week.
